There has been remarkable progress in lingual orthodontic treatment for past 40years since the development of the lingual bracket. As a result, lots of successful treatment results with lingual appliances have been reported. In spite of the development of accurate indirect bonding technique, various treatment technique and the introduction of cutting-edge technology, there are still many difficulties in lingual orthodontic treatment compared to labial orthodontic treatment.

To overcome these difficulties in lingual orthodontic treatment, we have to understand basic differences between lingual and labial orthodontic treatment, and apply proper orthodontic forces to obtain desired tooth movements.

In this presentation, the differences between lingual and labial orthodontic treatment in the tooth movement produced by various orthodontic forces will be discussed, and several clinical tips to overcome these difficulties in lingual orthodontic treatment will be suggested.
