Biocreative Dentofacial Orthopedics in Permanent Dentition

Seong Hun Kim

Dr Kim is a Professor and Head of the Department of Orthodontics School of Dentistry, Kyung Hee University. He is also a visiting assistant professor of Department of Orthodontics, Saint Louis University, and Visiting Professor and Honorary Head, Department of Orthodontics, National Hospital of Odontology and Stomatology in Hochiminh City Vietnam. Dr. Kim obtained an Orthodontic certificate and MS in Department of Orthodontics, School of Dentistry at the Kyung Hee University, Seoul, Korea, and PhD in Department of Orthodontics, School of Dentistry at the Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea. He was the volunteer faculty of the Division of Orthodontics, Department of Orofacial Sciences at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr Kim was selected as one of 100 Top Authors of 100 year of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJODO) at 2015. One of his research paper (Angle Orthod 2015; 85: 253-262) was named as winner of the 2017 Edward H Angle Research Prize as the best paper published in The Angle Orthodontist. Dr. Kim has lectured and published nationally and internationally on temporary skeletal anchorage devices (miniimplant and miniplate), corticotomy related orthodontics Digital Orthodontics, and Biocreaetive Orthodontics Strategy. He is the author of ten international text books and over 160 international and domestic scientific articles about this topic.

Lecture Description

The Biocreative Orthodontic Strategy has exactly three characteristics. First, it has as its main goal the harmonization of the muscular-TMJ and the occlusal relationship. Second, we use a combination of static and dynamic analysis to achieve this harmony. Third, we try to achieve the maximum treatment effect with the target approach using the fewest tools. When the target includes the teeth, alveolar bone, and the maxillary complex, we call it Biocreative dentofacial orthopedics (BDO). BDO uses circum-maxillary suture activation, sutural distraction osteogenesis, and compression osteogenesis to achieve dentofacial treatment effect, and the treatment strategy can be different depending on whether the patient has growth potential or not. In this presentation, I will introduce the concept and characteristics of BDO, and present BDO treatment for skeletal asymmetry, transverse problem, and complex antero-posterior problem patients through related scientific studies and case reports. Audience members will learn specific clinical tactics and overall treatment protocols using BDO that will broaden their scope of treatment options like Noah’s Ark in the current orthodontic appliance flood.

Learning objectives

1. After this course, attendees will be able to define the characteristics of biocreative dentofacial orthopedics and evaluate its actual treatment effect.
2. After this course, attendees will be able to define the different characteristics of tissue bone borne expander (C-expander) and bone only ATOZ for transverse correction and evaluate their actual treatment effect.
3. After this course, attendees will be able to learn different kinds of corticotomy to overcome the anatomic limitation in complicated BDO patients such as augmented corticotomy, wide linear corticotomy and orthopedic traction.
4. After this course, attendees will be able to learn simple and Effective TSADs placement method of mid-palatal/lateral palatal area.
