Special Lectures IV

Class II Correction using Temporary Anchorage Devices
Michael Chaffee

Lecture Description
Skeletal anchorage offers the orthodontist an additional tool to help with class II correction, and positioning anterior teeth in the face ideally. This presentation will cover the use of temporary anchorage devices to correct class II malocclusion, with a special emphasis on the treatment of high angle class II skeletal patterns. Diagnosis and treatment planning using the philosophy of Tom Creekmore, and his 1997 JCO article, "Where teeth should be positioned in the face and jaws and how to get them there" will be discussed. There will be an emphasis on controlling the vertical dimension, to help improve the odds of total condylar growth being greater than the increments of vertical facial growth, resulting in improved chin projection, as described by Fred Schudy in his class article in the Angle Orthodontist, "The rotation of the mandible resulting from growth, its implications in orthodontic treatment." Learning objectives will include accurate diagnosis of difficult-to-treat high angle class II malocclusion, treatment planning for such cases, and mechanics involved in attempting to improve growth pattern and encourage chin projection.
