Autotransplantation in Adults: Current Application and Beyond
Takashi Ono

Lecture Description
Thanks to the remarkable improvements in dental technology and increased public awareness of the significance of the oral function in the body's health (e.g., oral frailty), the number of adult patients seeking orthodontic treatment has been increasing at our university hospitals. On the other hand, reports showing a significant negative correlation between the number of remaining teeth and the prevalence of dementia suggest that one of the key points in orthodontic treatment for adults may be "NOT to reduce the number of teeth". ˇˇSo far, we have performed autotransplantation of the teeth with complete root formation in orthodontic treatment of adults. Based on many animal model studies, this treatment method has been established to a point where it has shown a certain degree of success. However, the same-day surgical procedure is fundamental for tooth autotransplantation, and such an ideal situation cannot always be expected. In fact, if there were no such time constraints, the possibility of treatment would be much broader. The management of the extraction site is a problem that needs to be solved because of the horizontal and vertical atrophy of the alveolar bone after tooth extraction. We are conducting studies on "positive" remodeling in order to broaden the scope of orthodontic treatment in response to the "negative" remodeling of alveolar bone atrophy. ˇˇIn this lecture, I will present our animal model studies and clinical studies based on the concept of contributing to the ˇ°extension of healthy life expectancy in adults".
