Since the introduction of the modern orthodontic bracket by Dr. Angle, there has been much progress in orthodontic treatment using fixed appliance. Dr Angle stopped extraction in orthodontic treatment after developing edgewise appliance. He introduced the edgewise in late 1920¡¯s and passed away in 1930. Dr Tweed started to learn orthodontics in 1928 under the guidance of Dr Angle. He started to treat patients without extraction using edgewise appliance. However, many cases were relapsed after treatment. So, he treated the cases again after premolar extraction. Then, he displayed the 100 retreated cases in 1940 Chicago AAO. I think Dr. Tweed is one of the 1st orthodontist who emphasize the importance of anchorage in orthodontics. As we know, the anchorage value of maxilla and mandible is different. So, he faced so many problems when he treated the cases with extraction, I think. Dr Tweed started his typodont course in 1941. He emphasized importance of the anchorage so much, thus, his mechanics was very complicated and takes long treatment time as well. Anchorage control is one of the most important procedures in orthodontic treatment. The difference between expert and beginner in orthodontic treatment depends on the anchorage control. Until this time so many reinforcing appliances were developed. So, in this presentation, I am going to review almost all kinds of anchorage appliances including skeletal anchorage.
