Advances in Lingual Orthodontics: Customized Brackets, Preformed Straight Archwire, and Multi-Functional Microimplant
Ryoon-Ki Hong
Lecture Description
New orthodontic treatment using lingual bracket and mushroom archwire, which was first introduced in the American Journal of Orthodontics in 1979 by Professor Fujita, caused a great sensation in orthodontics. However, it had problems such as limited treatment indications, long treatment time, and low treatment results. Since then, many different lingual brackets have been developed, making it possible to perform tooth movement more effectively and alleviate tongue discomfort, and archwires have also been replaced from individualized mushroom-shaped to preformed straight archwires, making treatment more convenient. In particular, the introduction of micro-implants has made it possible to expand the range of treatment indications and overcome limitations not only in labial but also in lingual orthodontic treatment. With the development of orthodontic hardware such as customized lingual brackets, preformed lingual straight archwires, and microimplants, lingual orthodontic treatment techniques have been developed and introduced through the efforts of many clinicians, and it has been possible to minimize side effects and obtain a high level of treatment results comparable to labial orthodontic treatment. In recent years, all malocclusions can be treated with lingual orthodontic treatment without any difference from labial. In this lecture, I will report the latest lingual orthodontic treatment using customized brackets, preformed straight archwire, and multi-functional microimplant.
