Etiology of gingival recession has been known to be multifactorial. In clinics, gingival recession occurs either during orthodontic treatment or completion of orthodontic treatment. Related to tooth movement, gingival recession is frequently observed in area of mandibular incisors. Among factors influencing gingival recession, there would be gingival biotype, shape of symphysis, amount of tooth movement and genioplasty. Each factor will be analyzed how it affect gingival recession. In addition, gingival recession has been progressed even after completion of orthodontic treatment. Here, I am going to present whether gingival recession will progress 3years after completion of tooth movement, and whether gingival recession will develop at a new site during long-term period of retention. Furthermore, in premolar and molar areas after maxillary expansion, gingival recession also occurs. Related to this, factors affecting gingival recession will be evaluated.
