Dentofacial Orthopedics in the 21st Century
Dr. Tung Nguyen
  • Dr. Tung Nguyen completed his dental training at Tufts University and received his Master's Degree and Certificate in Orthodontics at the University of North Carolina. He completed the William R Proffit Teaching Fellowship before joining the faculty at the University of North Carolina. He is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Dentofacial Deformities Clinic. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a member of the Angle Society of Orthodontists. He received the BF and Helen Dewel Award for best clinical research from the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics in 2012 for the work done on Class III bone anchors. Dr. Nguyen has over 50 publications and book chapters and has lectured nationally and internationally. His research interests are 3D imaging, 3D printing and dentofacial orthopedics.

The introduction of 3D imaging and skeletal anchorage has changed the profession of dentistry. These technologies are improving treatment modalities for our patients with new applications emerging every year. This lecture will discuss some of the interdisciplinary application of CBCT and skeletal anchorage in the treatment of Class III Dentofacial deformities.

Early treatment for Class III patients involves extra-oral devices designed to protract the maxilla or restrain mandibular growth. These methods have limited success because they are age sensitive and often produce dentoalveolar side-effects. The use of skeletal anchorage offers a promising alternative to obtain orthopedic correction with little or no dentoalveolar compensations. Bone Anchored Maxillary Protraction (BAMP) has been shown to be effective in forward distraction of the maxilla while simultaneously restraining mandibular growth. This lecture will cover clinical and orthopedic benefits of BAMP treatment including studies comparing BAMP outcomes to conventional facemask therapy. The lecture will review clinical cases and studies to help guide doctors in the management of Class III patients. The surgical protocol for the placement of bone anchors and clinical management and retention will be discussed.

Learning objectives:

Part I
1. Learn how to obtain orthopedic correction of the maxilla and mandible using the BAMP protocol.
2. Review indications and contraindications for BAMP treatment.
3. Review clinical protocol for BAMP treatment.
4. Discuss retention protocol and compare results to orthognathic surgery.
5. Application of Bone Anchors for the treatment of Craniofacial Clefts
