Class III Malocclusion

Maxillary Expansion with TADs in Young Adults
Peter Ngan

Lecture Description
Maxillary expansion with traditional rapid palatal expansion (RPE) appliances is limited to treatment of maxillary transverse deficiencies before the pubertal growth spurt. Treatment with tooth-borne expansion appliances also have side effects such as tipping and extrusion of anchorage teeth. The speaker will introduce the use of bone-borne Micro-implant Assisted RPE (MARPE) appliance for young adults. The current literature on the use of MARPE appliances will be reviewed and clinical cases will be used to demonstrate the effectiveness of these appliances.
Learning objective
  1. Clinicians will know the limitations of tooth-borne expansion appliance and the application of bone-borne expansion appliance in treatment of maxillary transverse deficiency in young adults.
  2. Clinicians will learn the clinical protocol in using Micro-implant Assisted RPE (MARPE) appliances for treatment of maxillary transverse deficiency in young adults.
