MARPE: Expanding the Limits of the Orthodontics
Júlio Gurgel

Lecture Description
The Mini-screw assisted rapid palatal expander (MARPE) appliance has been increasingly used to correct the transverse discrepancy of the maxilla. Thus, there has been a significant increase in the use of MARPE not only for the treatment of posterior crossbite. Among other indications, it has been observed the systematic indication of MARPE for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, the increase in the dental arch perimeter, and auxiliary anchorage for maxillary protraction. The purpose of this presentation is to show the evaluation methods currently used for MARPE indication, the importance of the periodontal biotype evaluation, and the influence of the age to obtain the expected results. The clinical case presentation will describe some technical procedures, such as bicortical anchorage and corticopuntion, that could be used to optimize the skeletal and dentoalveolar results.
Learning objective
  1. This presentation aims to increase the comprehension of the MARPE indication for treatment of the malocclusion and functional abnormalities.
  2. The attendant will be able to apply the evaluation methods and technical procedures presented to optimize the skeletal and dentoalveolar results.
